A Slow Orbit Around a Black Hole

▶ 48 minCosmic JourneysWeightlessvoice: Arthur from LudlowPremium

A journey of twenty-seven thousand light years, from a dark field on Earth to the center of the Milky Way, where four million suns' worth of mass sits in a space smaller than Mercury's orbit. You do not fall in. You settle into a high, steady orbit, the way the Earth circles the Sun, and look.

Along the way: a country clergyman in 1783 imagining stars too heavy for their own light to leave; a telephone engineer whose turning antenna heard the galaxy's center hiss; two teams of astronomers who watched a single star, S2, go all the way around the dark every sixteen years. Up close, starlight bends into soft arcs, time runs slow, and a dim ring of gas glows like embers in a grate.

The ending, given away now: you drift home, back past the Sun to your own room, and find you are still in orbit around that same quiet center. Everyone is. Nobody falls in.

The first minute

Let the day be over now. Whatever it asked of you, you gave what you could. That is enough. The rest of it can wait for morning, and the morning is a long way off. Let your body grow heavy on the bed. Let your shoulders loosen. Let your hands rest wherever they have landed…

Why this one works at night

It keeps one gentle, true fact at its center: from far enough away, a black hole's gravity is no different from a star's of the same weight. So the whole story is a calm circle, not a fall, with nothing pulling and nothing to brace for. The strangest physics in the universe — bent light, slowed time, a ring of glow photographed from the other side of the galaxy — told at the pace of something going round and round.

“…So somewhere out there, near the dark heart of the galaxy, there is a great cloud that, if you could somehow stand inside it and breathe, might smell faintly of—”

The kind of sentence people fall asleep during

A Slow Orbit Around a Black Hole is 48 minutes long, in the synthesised voice of Arthur from Ludlow, and ends quieter than it begins. It lives in the Lullable app.
