A Lullable sleep story
The Building of a Cathedral
Walk into a thirteenth-century city at dusk, where the largest unfinished thing in the world has been rising for sixty years and will not be done for eighty more. Visit the lodge where stone dust turns gold in the doorway light, and the plaster tracing floor where three generations of masters have scratched their thinking at full size. Learn why the pointed arch lets stone float, how a timber centering is struck and a vault suddenly holds itself, and why lime mortar sets the pace of the whole century. Then watch the site put itself to bed, wrapped in straw against the frost, still quietly turning back into stone in the dark.
The ending, given away now, per house rules: only stone, and light, and time, and none of them in any hurry at all. There is nothing else to wait for, which is the point.
The first minute
However the day has gone, it is over now. It is done with. It has nothing more to ask of you. Let your shoulders come down. Let the bed take your whole weight. Nothing tonight needs carrying any further. Let your hands fall open. Let your jaw loosen. Let your breathing find its own slower pace. Nothing here needs watching. Nothing needs deciding. Nothing is waiting on you. Tonight we are going to a small city in the middle of the thirteenth century. In it, the largest thing anyone has ever seen is slowly being built. It is a cathedral.…
Why this one works at night
Sixty years done, eighty to go, and every person on the site content with that arithmetic. Nothing in your life needs finishing by morning either. The pace is generational and calm, and the whole of it is stone, dusk, gold, chant. Nothing in it asks to be followed closely, which is what makes it easy to let go of.
“…Look out through the glass, at the flanks of the building, where rows of stone arms leap from the walls—”
The Building of a Cathedral is 43 minutes long, in the synthesised voice of Arthur from Ludlow, and ends quieter than it begins. It lives in the Lullable app.
