A Lullable sleep story

The Fossil Hunter of Lyme Regis

▶ 49 minAncient WorldsDriftingvoice: Arthur from LudlowPremium

You arrive on the shore at Lyme Regis a little before sunrise, when the tide is out and the blue-grey ledges are wet and shining. You learn what an ammonite was, how the striped cliffs were laid down in a warm sea, and why a winter morning after rain is the best time to walk here. Then you follow Mary Anning home to her workshop, where a sea creature is freed from the shale a grain at a time, and up the hill to her shop on Broad Street. The light turns gold on the water, a heron stands on the far ledge, and the tide comes quietly back.

The ending, given away now, per house rules: let your breathing go slow, and slow, and slower. There is nothing else to wait for, which is the point.

The first minute

Wherever you are as you listen to this, whatever kind of day it has been, let it end now. It is over. It asks nothing more of you. Let your shoulders sink down, away from your ears. Let the surface beneath you take your weight completely. There is nothing left for you to carry tonight. Let your hands grow soft. Let your breathing slow, all on its own. There is nothing here to watch for. Nothing to decide. Nothing you will need to remember in the morning. Tonight we are going to walk, very slowly, along a shore at first…

Why this one works at night

Nothing here needs solving. Only wet stone at low tide, a basket of coiled shells, and a woman who took her time with two hundred million years. The pace is slow as the tide, and the whole of it is cool, salted, pale gold. Nothing in it asks to be followed closely, which is what makes it easy to let go of.

“…And it was exactly like a small black thing she had been finding in the shale—”

The kind of sentence people fall asleep during
