A Lullable sleep story
The Long Way Home: A Slow Evening Journey
You walk the long way home down an Irish coast road at dusk, with the sea keeping pace on one side and stone walls built to let the wind through on the other. The road passes a small harbor of knocking boats, a bridge over a talking stream, and a sleeping village where lamplight goes window by window from white to amber to out. Soft rain arrives in the hedges, right on time. A lamp burns in a neighbor's window for late travelers, an old coastal custom, and at last a whitewashed house appears with its own window lit, its turf fire banked low and patient under its ash, waiting to be climbed into.
The ending, given away now, per house rules: the rain eases now, almost apologetically, to its thinnest whisper. There is nothing else to wait for, which is the point.
The first minute
Come in from the day now. It is finished with you, and it means that kindly. Whatever you carried today, you carried far enough. Set it down inside the door, the way you set down heavy bags, and leave it there till morning. The bed has you now. Nothing else is holding you up, and nothing else needs to. Let your feet go heavy. Let your hands go quiet. Let your breath settle into the pace of the very end of a day. Slow, and low, and asking nothing. Tonight's journey is the oldest one there is. We are simply…
Why this one works at night
There is no adventure in tonight's walk, only lanes and hedges and a lamp left burning in a window for whoever is still out. That lamp is for you too. The pace is unhurried, step by ste, and the whole of it is coastal, hedgerowed, hushed. Nothing in it asks to be followed closely, which is what makes it easy to let go of.
“…By morning they will have patrolled every root and leaf of it, and will hand the whole hedge back to the daylight, inspected and found—”
The Long Way Home: A Slow Evening Journey is 31 minutes long, in the synthesised voice of Niamh from Kinsale, and ends quieter than it begins. It lives in the Lullable app.
