A Lullable sleep story
The Quiet Observatory: Questions About Time
You climb a small hill to a small observatory to spend the night with the gentlest big question there is: what is time. A telescope shows that starlight is an old patient archive, arriving from a hundred different pasts all at once, and that there is no single now shared by the whole universe. Pendulum clocks, water clocks, and candle clocks each try to hang a bucket in a stream that never pools. A carpenter's son builds four clocks to solve longitude at sea, a hill at Greenwich becomes the world's meridian, and modern clocks now count the hum inside an atom. At the end, the astronomer closes the logbook with one word, closed, and so can you.
The ending, given away now, per house rules: let it fall on you too. There is nothing else to wait for, which is the point.
The first minute
The day has run out, all on its own, the way days do. You did not have to finish it. It finished itself. Whatever it left undone belongs to tomorrow now, and tomorrow is not here. Let the bed carry you. It has carried heavier things than tonight. Let your eyes rest closed. Let your hands lie open. Let your breath slow to the pace of someone with nowhere to be. Which is, for the next several hours, exactly what you are. Tonight we are going to climb a small hill, to a small observatory, and spend the night with…
Why this one works at night
Time only flows, never hurries, never waits. Tonight it is only asking you to lie still while it carries you, the way it has carried every sleeper before you. The pace is slow and thoughtful, and the whole of it is starlit, hushed, timeless. Nothing in it asks to be followed closely, which is what makes it easy to let go of.
“…The answer came from a quiet English carpenter's son named John Harrison, who spent most of his life building four clocks—”
The Quiet Observatory: Questions About Time is 36 minutes long, in the synthesised voice of Emma from Oxford, and ends quieter than it begins. It lives in the Lullable app.
