A Lullable sleep story

Voyager 1: A Journey to Interstellar Space

Follow the most distant object people have ever made, out past Jupiter and Saturn and into the space between the stars. A gold record bolted to its side, a transmitter no brighter than a refrigerator bulb, and a whisper of radio that takes almost a full day to reach a dish in the Australian grass. Along the way, the gentle theft of a gravity assist, the choice to look at Titan, and the faint steady hum the gas out there turns out to make. Nothing about it is urgent. Nothing about it ever was.

The ending, given away now, per house rules: just the dark, and something small and gold moving through it, very slowly, in a straight line. There is nothing else to wait for, which is the point.

The first minute

Whatever kind of day it has been, you can set it down now. It is finished. It has no more claim on you. Let your shoulders come away from your ears. Let the bed take your whole weight. Nothing tonight needs carrying any further. Let your hands fall open. Let your jaw soften. Let your breathing find a slower rhythm on its own. Nothing here needs watching. Nothing needs deciding. Nothing is waiting for your answer. Tonight we are going to follow something small and very far away. It is a machine. It is about the size of a small…

Why this one works at night

It left in 1977 and it is not going anywhere in particular. It is simply still going, steadily, and none of it needs watching tonight. The pace is steady and outward, and the whole of it is dark, distant, gold, calm. Nothing in it asks to be followed closely, which is what makes it easy to let go of.

“…They were recorded while she sat in a laboratory, thinking about what it feels like to be in love—”
